The Urban Standard, Bristol – Review

There’s a new kid in town. Nestled amongst the independent cafe’s and trinket shops on Gloucester Road in Bristol, is a new restaurant that just sprung up. Looking like it would be well suited in Soho, the sexy  The Urban Standard has arrived.

With it’s stripped down walls, original wall and floor tiles and impressive stocked bar, has a laid back vibe just oozing with coolness. Speaking to the passionate barman as to what local beer I fancied, suggested was the delicious Arbor Ale ‘Why Kick A Moo Cow? ‘a New Zealand pale ale with balls. Brewed in Bristol and goes down so smoothly.

I went for the ultra sexy sounding Truffled Mac ‘n’ Cheese – Three cheese macaroni with truffle oil, sautéed mushrooms & caramelised onions  and with the option to add pulled pork, you know I’m gonna be adding pulled pork to mine! Damn it was good! Crispy gooey joy in a each mouthful. Nuggets of tender pulled pork nestled in creamy cheesy, with a hint of sweetness from the onions and mushroom delight hit from the truffle. Luxurious and a bargain at £10.50 with the pork.

My friend went for the awesome sounding  Rack ‘em up sticky BBQ baby-back ribs with  potato wedges & sweet corn succotash. Watching my chic friend gnaw on those ribs is a really good sign how good they were. Pile up the napkins and gnaw down.

This next dish was a popular one for our table and when it came out I can see why. Mac ‘n’ Pork- BBQ pulled pork, mac ‘n’ cheese & a fried egg in a floured bap. Holy Cow!!! Oomph who ever came up with this I take my imaginary hat off to you. They did not last long on our table.

You would think that after all that amazing food there couldn’t possibly be any room for dessert. Wrong, especially when they look like this beautiful Treacle Tart, with clotted cream ice cream and peanut brittle. Decadent without being so super rich that you needed to lay in a dark room. The slight tang for the ice cream cuts through the richness from the treacle. The best tart I’ve had in a while 😉

I went for the Chocolate Mousse with Sea Salt Caramel and Honeycomb. You know if there is a sea salted caramel on the menu I was going to go for it, or I think my cousin would disown me. There were plenty of noises of appreciation when we tucked into this sexy pot. Crunch from the honeycomb, silken smooth caramel and light rich mousse was a thing of beauty. Sad to see the clear bottom of the glass.

We had a great relaxed night with friends, chatting, gossiping and laughing. Give The Urban Standard a go, the staff are super friendly and the food is fantastic. Also their roasts look like the Mac Daddy!
